Vitamins And Minerals Can Bridge A Diet's Deficiencies
Vitamins and minerals are for young and old alike. If you are a supplement buyer or planning to be one, you must be asking the questions “Which vitamins and minerals should I be taking?” or “Should I be taking them?”. Whatever the question may be, it brings us to the point that the market is saturated with several choices of vitamin and mineral supplements from cheap to expensive brands. One thing, I learned though is, you get what you pay for even when it comes to supplements. In “Vitamins for Dummies”, by Christopher Hobbs, L.A.c. and Elson Haas, M.D., there were only two factors mentioned that one should consider when choosing vitamin and mineral supplements:
Price: Don’t buy by price! If you buy the cheapest brand, you are likely to get a product with cheap ingredients. You owe yourself the best – you’re worth it. But don’t buy the most expensive product either. You’re likely to pay for the brand name. Buy vitamin and mineral supplements price in the middle range.
Brand: Do buy by brand. Find few brands you can trust and stick to them.
With the lifestyle that I have, it is easy to skip a meal or to munch on junk food since it is convenient. But because of the cancer that occurred in my family, I am not one to take for granted the nutrition that I provide for myself and my family. Our meals now normally include vegetables. Also, vitamin and mineral supplements have become part of my daily regimen, including that of my husband’s, my 22-year old daughter’s, and my 10-year old son’s. I could never be sure if we are meeting the daily requirement of certain nutrients, so I would rather allow the nutritional supplements I make available for the family to make up for the difference.
Now, you may not believe in supplementation, but if you belong in one of the following groups, it is worth considering supplementing your diet with vitamins and minerals:
- Are you over 65?
- Do you have a medical condition?
- Are you pregnant or nursing?
- Are you a woman?
-
- Are you a regular Jane or Joe?
- Do you drink alcohol very often or abuse alcohol?
- Follow a vegetarian diet?
- Do you love junk food and don’t generally consume at least five half-cup servings of fruits and vegetables daily?
- Do you choose to eat fewer than 1,500 calories daily because you are dieting, sedentary, or have an infirmity or physical handicap?
- Are you hospitalized?
- Can’t afford all the nutritious foods that you know are good for you?
- Have a monster sweet tooth and eat a diet high in refined sugar?
- Have a mood disorder, like depression?
- Often experience loose stools or chronic diarrhea?
- Are obese and are 12 or younger?
I think we generally need to supplement our diet on a daily basis because you and I can find ourselves in one of these categories. Why wait for a disease to plague us when we can prevent this from happening by being educated on how better nutrition and supplementation can benefit us long-term.
Vitamins and minerals usually come in pills, capsules or tablets. For some of us who are on the run, and a glass of water may not always be available, or for those who are tired of swallowing pill after pill, gelceutical is an effective alternative. My family and I have been big fans of MIN because it is easy to take, no water needed, and we are able to take it anytime, anywhere and without hassle.
